At Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, we use a multi-tiered approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavioural needs. This process begins with high-quality instruction and universal screening for all students in the classroom. Students requiring additional support are provided with targeted interventions designed to meet their individual needs and accelerate their progress.
- High-quality, research-based classroom instruction: All students receive high-quality, research-based instruction in the classroom.
- Ongoing student assessment: Universal screening and ongoing progress monitoring provide information about each student’s achievement and rate of learning. This information helps identify students who may require additional monitoring or targeted intervention. Using a Response to Intervention approach, student progress is monitored regularly to assess achievement and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.
- Tiered instruction: A multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) is used to differentiate instruction and provide increasing levels of support according to student need. This includes targeted, research-based interventions that are matched to individual learning needs.
- Parent involvement: Parents are kept informed about their child’s progress, the instruction and interventions being provided, the staff involved and the learning or behavioural goals being addressed. Where appropriate, students may also have an Individual Learning Plan to support their learning and progress.
