At Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Primary School, we are committed to ensuring the safety, health and wellbeing of all students in our care. To help achieve this, we employ a Wellbeing Officer on a part time basis to work with student, families and staff.
Supporting Families
At OLSH we understand that families are the experts when it comes to their children. By working together and sharing information about particular issues we can gain the best outcomes for students. All families face adversity at different times, and our Wellbeing Officer can support, advise and refer for families to access services when the need arises.
Supporting Students
At OLSH we endeavour to support the growth and development of the whole student. We provide support to ensure the social and emotional wellbeing of our students is addressed and students are able to flourish in a safe and supportive environment. Support can be provided through incidental 'Check-ins', individual sessions, group sessions and family sessions.
Programs
Zones of Regulation
The Zones of Regulation is a curriculum geared toward helping students gain skills in consciously regulating their actions, which in turn leads to increased control and problem-solving abilities. Using a cognitive behaviour approach, the curriculum’s learning activities are designed to help students recognise when they are in different states called “zones,” with each of four zones represented by a different colour. In the activities, students also learn how to use strategies or tools to stay in a zone or move from one to another. Students explore calming techniques, cognitive strategies, and sensory supports so they will have a toolbox of methods to use to move between zones. To deepen students’ understanding of how to self-regulate, the lessons set out to teach students these skills: how to read others’ facial expressions and recognise a broader range of emotions, perspective about how others see and react to their behaviour, insight into events that trigger their less regulated states, and when and how to use tools and problem solving skills.
Social Stencil
Social Stencil is an Australian neuro-affirming social-emotional curriculum that helps young people understand their own and others’ social, emotional, learning, and communication styles. Social Stencil can be used for whole class delivery (Tier 1), small group delivery (Tier 2) or one-to-one delivery (Tier 3). At OLSH, we use the program on a whole class basis in Years Three and Five.
Inform & Empower
Inform and Empower is designed to help schools teach cyber safety and digital wellbeing. It is an innovative, whole-school approach that creates a powerful online community for kids, teaching them about the importance of being safe online and how to tackle cyber issues.
Respectful Relationships
The Respectful Relationships program supports schools and early childhood settings to promote and model respect, positive attitudes and behaviours. It teaches our children how to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence.
Seasons for Growth
Seasons for Growth is a loss and grief education program that caters for young people who have experienced significant loss due to death or family breakdown. This program runs on a needs basis. The main element of this program is the promotion of social and emotional well-being and specifically develops skills in communication, decision-making and problem-solving. The program aims to promote resilience, to enhance coping resources and to develop life skills in young people.
Speech Therapy Support
Speech Therapy is available within the school for students who have been identified through formal assessment. The Speech Therapist is provided to us through the Catholic Education Office and may visit up to three times per term, with additional activities provided for the school and home to implement where possible.
OLSH has a number of evidence-based programs that run throughout the entire school, or are available to students as the need arises. These include: Zones of Regulation, You Can Do It, Socially Speaking, A Volcano In My Tummy, Seasons for Growth and Bounce Back.
